Wikimania 2011 Conference - Day 1 Morning: Moderator: Sheizaf Rafaeli * Introduction by Wikimedia Israel Chairman Tomer Ashur * Introduction by former minister Meir Sheetrit * Keynote speech by Prof. Yochai Benkler From networked cooperation to human sociality: Wikipedia as the model for a new view of social relations A decade ago Wikipedia burst into a world not ready to comprehend it. Thousands of people cooperating effectively, without price signals to offer "incentives" or managerial hierarchy to direct efforts was an impossibility. And yet, it moves. And as it moved it combined with a deep shift across many disciplines, from biology and neuroscience to organizational sociology, experimental economics, and social psychology to paint a very different view of who we are, as human beings, and what we are capable of when we build and inhabit systems that rely on our better selves rather than on the cramped, pessimistic view of traditional economic modeling. A decade ago our explanations of Wikipedia depended on the uniqueness of the Net. Today, we are ready to learn the deeper lessons: that we are more cooperative than we came to believe in the last half century, and that our challenges lie in learning how to build a new field of cooperative human systems design not only online, but for our lives more generally as the kind of social human beings we really are.

Jimmy Wales is an Internet entrepreneur and wiki enthusiast, and founder of the Wikipedia project. Jimmy was born in Huntsville, Alabama in 1966, and is a graduate of Auburn University and the University of Alabama. He worked as Research Director at Chicago Options Associates, a futures and options trading firm then located in Chicago. In the mid-1990s he started Bomis, a search portal focusing on aspects of pop culture, one of the first users of the freely licensed data of the Open Directory Project. In 1999, Jimmy had the concept of a freely distributable encyclopedia and founded Nupedia, by hiring philosopher Larry Sanger as editor-in-chief and assigning two programmers to write software for it. Nupedia failed, perhaps due to being a top-down cathedral model, as opposed to Wikipedia, which is the ultimate bazaar. After two years of working with the Nupedia concept, that team opened Wikipedia to help channel content into Nupedia; Wikipedia became an instant success, but not in the envisioned way, and Nupedia was shut down. In 2003, Jimmy set up the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization, to support Wikipedia and its sister projects. In 2004, Jimmy founded Wikia. He was appointed a fellow of Harvard Law School's Berkman Center for Internet and Society in mid-2005, and in October of 2005 joined the Board of Directors of Socialtext, a provider of wiki technology to businesses. He lives in St. Petersburg, Florida.watch the whole symposium on webcast.bibalex.org

Wikipedia is the most comprehensive encyclopedia that has ever existed. Remarkably, its content is edited and maintained entirely by volunteers from around the world. Hosted by a non-profit that is funded by donations, Wikipedia is shared with around 500,000,000 people every month. The international conference for users of Wikipedia - called Wikimania - has been organized in a different city every year since 2005 to present and discuss topics related to free knowledge, free culture, and open-source software. Wikipedia is part of a social movement that values transparency, collaboration, and the free and open sharing of knowledge. View this documentary on Wikimedia Commons here: 🤍
