Known as ‘Big Daddy’ by his supporters and ‘The Butcher’ by his critics, Idi Amin went from being a dirt-poor illiterate boy from a town in north-west Uganda so remote nobody knows its name, to becoming the third president of Uganda, a speaker on the global political stage. He was infamous for his ruthless stomping down of perceived traitors, expulsions of non-Africans, his widespread terror, and his taking joy in humiliation. More than 30 years after the tragic events the son of Idi Amin meets the son of Oboth Ofumbi in Uganda and the most unpredictable journey of their lives begins... They leave Kampala for Kidepo National Park as they currently work for the same businessman who is planning to turn of Idi Amin's megalomanic dreams into reality: a huge hotel in the game park. After traveling day and night they arrive at the park. In the next few days, they go on safaris to discover the park, visit the structure of the hotel and most importantly start sharing their memories with each other from their childhood to the tragedy... Eventually, Ofumbi's son invites Amin's son to his family ranch where a tribal, religious and family reconciliation takes place with Muslim, Christian and local community leaders according to African traditions. Children of Dictators presents some of the most influential dictators of the 20th century through the eyes of their children and relatives. The documentary series shares rarely-seen personal perspectives of history and offers a deeper understanding of the most feared leaders in the world, while focusing on the portraits of their children. The filmmakers worked without a crew and just two small broadcast cameras, giving them exclusive access to children of dictators, namely Lucia Pinochet in Chile, Jaffar Amin in Uganda, Bettina Goering in Germany and Fidel Castro's daughter in Miami. It is 50 years since Uganda's former-dictator Idi Amin expelled thousands of members of the Asian community from the country, after accusing them of disloyalty. They were given just three months to leave, or face being placed in concentration camps. About 27,000 people left their homes for the UK, many of them were British passport holders. Idi Amin was a Ugandan president born circa 1925 in Kokobo, West Nile Province, Uganda. He rose within the military from the 1940s through 1970. Amin overthrew the current leader in 1971 and declared himself president, and he remained in power from 1971-1979. During his tenure, he lived a lavish lifestyle while contributing to the collapse of Uganda’s economy. He sought to stay in power at all costs, resulting in extensive human rights violations via mass killings. Overthrown in 1979, he fled first to Libya and then to Saudi Arabia, where he died on August 16, 2003. #Biography Subscribe for more Biography: 🤍 Delve deeper into Biography on our site: 🤍 Follow Biography for more surprising stories from fascinating lives: Facebook - 🤍 Instagram - 🤍 Twitter - 🤍 Biography.com captures the most gripping, surprising, and fascinating stories about famous people: The biggest break. In October 1978, a brutal war broke out between the nations of Uganda and Tanzania. This war commonly referred to as the Kagera War or the Uganda-Tanzania War of 1978-9 was a landmark event in postcolonial East African history… Rooted in a deep rivalry between Idi Amin of Uganda and Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, the conflict provoked bitter exchanges at the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), contributed to the failure of Tanzania’s economy, and brought an end to eight years of Amin’s brutal dictatorship in Uganda… Sources: George Roberts, ßThe Uganda-Tanzania War, the Fall of Idi Amin, and the Failure of African Diplomacy, 1978-9 Abnormal: Why the Tanzanian Invasion of Uganda Was, and Was Not, a Humanitarian Intervention Fall of Idi Amin Source: Economic and Political Weekly , May 26, 1979, Vol. 14, No. 21 (May 26, 1979), pp. 907-910 Reviewed Work: War in Uganda: The Legacy of Idi Amin by Tony Avirgan, Martha Honey, Review by: Peter F. Since 1970, there was a period in Uganda where people saw only murder, suffering, starvation, and helplessness. It seemed as if the government was thirsty for the blood of the common man. The government was of a terrible dictator Idi Amin who made Uganda extremely backward in every sector. Amin's journey from the British Empire till his death was very tragic. #Uganda #Africa #IdiAmin #Britishempire #NorthSudanvsSouthSudan

(18 Aug 1972) STORY RR7233 UGANDA EXPELS ITS ASIANS In Uganda, President Amin has ordered the expulsion of nearly 80,000 Asians, whom he claims are 'milking the economy' and denying the country's African population what he says is their rightful share of the economic benefits of independence. The Asians have only three months to sell up their property and move out. About 50,000 of them hold British passports and Britain has accepted responsibility for them. The Asians have been part of the East African scene for over a hundred years. By virtue of their industry and intelligence, they have established themselves as the main professional and commercial class. Many of them are undoubtedly wealthy compared with the Africans, and their close-knit community has preserved its own culture and traditions. In January 1971, Idi Amin’s forces overthrew the then President of Uganda Apollo Millton Obote, while he was on a visit to Singapore to attend a Commonwealth conference. Idi Amin became the president of the country and I am sure we all know how his story ended. Obote’s story and both of his stints in power have largely been overshadowed by Idi Amin, yet Obote was also accused of widespread human rights abuses and according to some sources the deaths attributed to his governments are greater than those of Amin. At the same time, Milton Obote’s contribution to the nationalist anticolonial struggle and the important role he played in founding the modern Ugandan nation in the first period of his rule seems almost indisputable. However, his overall life history and political career in particular continues to divide opinions amongst many of his critics and admirers. Who was he, how was he able to come back into power, and what happened in both of his stints in power. In this Episode of African Biographics, we cover the life story of Apollo Milton Obote, Uganda’s President who was deposed by Idi Amin and then came back to power.
