Recently upgraded to the optic fibre broadband, so I am thinking would be a good time to also upgrade my routers. Actually I was quite surprised about the outcome, as I am thinking AC5300 is a super fast router though it's a bit aged. Seems AXE11000 is the way to go. Hope this helps.

Gone was the complex naming scheme featuring seemingly nonsensical letters, being replaced by Wi-Fi 6 (or 802.11ax) as the next-generation standard. The new naming scheme also retroactively applies to the older 802.11ac technology (Wi-Fi 5), and the even older 802.11n standard (Wi-Fi 4). But there’s more to Wi-Fi 6 than a new naming convention though, as the next generation of Wi-Fi has numerous benefits compared to previous iterations. More devices on a network Arguably the biggest focus for Wi-Fi 6 is reducing congestion and allowing more devices to connect to a network. This is first accomplished by the use of MU-MIMO technology, allowing multiple users to be handled in one go. Think of it like a fuel station that only has one pump versus a station that has several pumps available. Wi-Fi 6 also utilizes other technologies like OFDMA and transmit beamforming to improve efficiency and network capacity respectively. All of this means your home network shouldn’t come to a crawl if you’ve got a ton of devices in the household. With today’s households including smartphones, laptops, smart TVs, and more, it’s certainly a challenge worth addressing. These tweaks should also make for a better experience at places with loads of people, with the alliance specifically mentioning retailers, apartment blocks, transportation hubs, and stadiums. Interestingly enough, this is also one of the benefits of 5G, allowing for more people to stay connected during sports games, music festivals and other mass events. Another benefit of Wi-Fi 6 is out-of-the-box support for the WPA3 security standard, which should make it more difficult for people to crack your Wi-Fi password. The last Wi-Fi standard (Wi-Fi 5 or 802.11ac) was introduced in 2013, although we also saw a “Wave 2” off-shoot emerge in 2016. Much has changed since then though, owing to the ubiquity of smart speakers and smart home gadgets in general. It’s important for the latest Wi-Fi standard to cater to these diverse devices, and that’s exactly what the Wi-Fi Alliance has done with Wi-Fi 6. In fact, the consortium goes so far to say the new standard was made for everything “from IoT and smart home, to businesses running large-scale, mission-critical deployments.” The updated standard uses 1024QAM to boost bandwidth for emerging use-cases, and target wake time (TWT) technology to increase battery life in Wi-Fi-enabled devices and IoT clients. The Wi-Fi Alliance says 1024QAM delivers a 25-percent boost to throughput at short range compared to Wi-Fi 5. #What do you need for Wi-Fi 6? Wi-Fi 6 requires users to have both a compliant router/access point and a smartphone/tablet/laptop supporting the new standard. If your device is supported but your router isn’t (or vice versa), then you won’t be seeing all the benefits. Several Wi-Fi 6 routers are already available on the likes of Amazon, with brands such as Netgear and Asus offering wares. These routers aren’t cheap though, varying from $340 to $500. You might want to wait a year or so to upgrade if you really must have the new standard. Furthermore, the Wi-Fi Alliance told Android Authority that certified routers are coming in the second half of 2019, implying that these current products aren’t certified. There are relatively few smartphones available right now that pack Wi-Fi 6 technology, with Samsung’s Galaxy S10 series being the first major flagship family to support it. This situation should improve thanks to the adoption of the Snapdragon 855 chipset, which indeed offers Wi-Fi 6 support. It’s all good upgrading to the next big standard, but you should ask yourself why you’ll need a Wi-Fi 6 router in the first place. The standard is theoretically capable of speeds of roughly 9.6Gbps, the alliance told us. But it added that you can expect gigabit speeds with “the right conditions.” But most people aren’t on gigabit internet connections right now, so it certainly makes less sense to upgrade to Wi-Fi 6 if you’re on a 100Mbps or lower internet connection. In an environment with loads of gadgets, such as a mall, office or public building? Then Wi-Fi 6 will help ease congestion for all devices. But you’ll want all devices on the network to support the standard in order to get the full benefit. Haven’t upgraded your home router since the days of Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) or earlier? Then why spend your money on an expensive Wi-Fi 6 router when you can either wait for the price to come down or opt for a cheap Wi-Fi 5 device instead?

(N or WiFi 4) TP-Link N450 TL-WR940N (AC or WiFi 5) Asus AC1900 RT-AC68U TP-Link AC2600 Archer A10 vs (AX or Wifi 6) D-Link AX5400 DIR-X5460, TP-Link AX1800 AX20, AX1500 AX10 802.11n or WiFi 4 2007 802.11n is an amendment that improves upon the previous 802.11 standards, that had the first draft of certification published in 2006. The 802.11n standard was retroactively labelled as Wi-Fi 4 by the Wi-Fi Alliance. The standard added support for multiple-input multiple-output antennas (MIMO). 802.11n operates on both the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz bands. Support for 5 GHz bands is optional. Its net data rate ranges from 54 Mbit/s to 600 Mbit/s. The IEEE has approved the amendment, and it was published in October 2009. Prior to the final ratification, enterprises were already migrating to 802.11n networks based on the Wi-Fi Alliance's certification of products conforming to a 2007 draft of the 802.11n proposal. 802.11ac or WiFi 5 - 2013 IEEE 802.11ac-2013 is an amendment to IEEE 802.11, published in December 2013, that builds on 802.11n. The 802.11ac standard was retroactively labelled as Wi-Fi 5 by Wi-Fi Alliance. Changes compared to 802.11n include wider channels (80 or 160 MHz versus 40 MHz) in the 5 GHz band, more spatial streams (up to eight versus four), higher-order modulation (up to 256-QAM vs. 64-QAM), and the addition of Multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO). The Wi-Fi Alliance separated the introduction of ac wireless products into two phases ("waves"), named "Wave 1" and "Wave 2". From mid-2013, the alliance started certifying Wave 1 802.11ac products shipped by manufacturers, based on the IEEE 802.11ac Draft 3.0 (the IEEE standard was not finalized until later that year). In 2016 Wi-Fi Alliance introduced the Wave 2 certification, to provide higher bandwidth and capacity than Wave 1 products. Wave 2 products include additional features like MU-MIMO, 160 MHz channel width support, support for more 5 GHz channels, and four spatial streams (with four antennas; compared to three in Wave 1 and 802.11n, and eight in IEEE's 802.11ax specification). 802.11ax or WiFi 6 2020 IEEE 802.11ax (marketed as Wi-Fi 6 by the Wi-Fi Alliance) is the successor to 802.11ac, and will increase the efficiency of WLAN networks. This project has the goal of providing 4x the throughput of 802.11ac at the user layer, having just 37% higher nominal data rates at the PHY layer. The 802.11ax standard is expected to become an official IEEE specification in September 2020. In the previous amendment of 802.11 (namely 802.11ac), Multi-User MIMO has been introduced, which is a spatial multiplexing technique. MU-MIMO allows the Access Point to form beams towards each Client, while transmitting information simultaneously. By doing so, the interference between Clients is reduced, and the overall throughput is increased, since multiple Clients can receive data at the same time. With 802.11ax, a similar multiplexing is introduced in the frequency domain, namely OFDMA. With this technique, multiple Clients are assigned with different Resource Units in the available spectrum. By doing so, an 80 MHz channel can be split into multiple Resource Units, so that multiple Clients receive different type of data over the same spectrum, simultaneously. In order to have enough subcarriers to support the requirements of OFDMA, four times as many subcarriers are needed than by the 802.11ac standard. In other words, for 20, 40, 80 and 160 MHz channels, there are 64, 128, 256 and 512 subcarriers in the 802.11ac standard, but 256, 512, 1024 and 2048 subcarriers in the 802.11ax standard. Since the available bandwidths have not changed and the number of subcarriers increases by a factor of 4, the subcarrier spacing is reduced by the same factor, which introduces 4 times longer OFDM symbols: for 802.11ac the duration of an OFDM symbol is 3.2 microseconds, and for 802.11ax it is 12.8 microseconds (both without guard intervals).
