You can also do this one drive at a time for example if you have 4tb drives and want to go to 8tb just first backup your data just in case then you can do one drive at a time but you need to wait for each drive to recover in the array which can take 10-20 hours or even days just depend on your drive size and synology modal. please always backup before doing anything so you don't lose any data. When installing packages onto a Synology NAS. If you have multiple volumes, by default you will see a wizard which will allow you to control which volume a package is installed onto. However, by ticking the option "Always install new packages on this volume in the future". You will set all packages to install automatically onto a specific volume. As this action in some instances will remove the setup wizard from being displayed when we install packages. How to Expand Storage Capacity by Adding Hard Drives Today we will be adding in an additional hard drives to your Synology's NAS RAID Pool. Its super easy to do as long as you follow some simple rules. 1. Backup most important data on your NAS using Hybrid backup 2. Check S.M.A.R.T test results on drives to make sure it don't find any faults on the drives, if it does, replace them. 3. Try not to over work the NAS while its expanding the storage pool and rebuilding the RAID Array. 4. I am using SHR Hybrid RAID which means I don't have to fill all my drive bays at the same time and gives me the option of adding additional drives later on. How to replace existing HDD with bigger ones and gain more storage space on Synology DSM 7 Replace Drive to Expand Storage Capacity In the steps below, we will provide an example of replacing the drives of an SHR storage pool. To replace drives: Launch Storage Manager. Go to Storage Pool to see which existing drive is the smallest. Power off your Synology NAS. (Skip this step if your Synology NAS supports hot-swapping.) Remove the smallest of the member drives and install a new, larger drive. Note: To avoid harming yourself or damaging your Synology NAS, please follow the drive installation instructions found in the Hardware Installation Guide for your Synology product. Power on your Synology NAS. Launch Storage Manager again. Go to HDD/SSD to make sure the new drive is recognized. The status of your storage pool should be Degraded. Select the storage pool, click Repair from the Action drop-down menu. Select the replacement drive to add to the storage pool. Then follow the steps of the wizard to finish. Repeat the above process until all desired drives have been replaced with larger ones.

When running a RAID/SHR (other than RAID0) you get at least one disk of fault tolerance. This means that if disk mechanically fails you still retain all of the data on that pool. In this video we are testing what happens to a RAID1 pool hosted on a Synology NAS when a disk fails, simulated by ripping the disk out in the middle of a transfer. Then we go through how to repair the storage pool by adding a new disk back into the pool. Synology DS923+ upgrade everything video as promised. In this video we are going to upgrade every component on the Synology DS923+ that's upgradable. Synology DS923+ Upgrade Everything video will revolve around these major components: NVME drives, the Synology proprietary 10gb network card and RAM. For NVME drives, we are going to use the Synology SNV3400 drive since we do want to use these as an NVME volume, but for pure caching, you can use any brand of devices. For 10bg networking we are going to install the Synology E10G22-T1-Mini, as this the only device that is compatible with the DS923+. This card can do 10gb but also 5bg and 2.5gb. For RAM we are going to use 32gb of ECC DDR4 we got from Amazon. Keep in mind, using non Synology RAM modules will void your warranty. If you are ok with that you can use any ECC DDR4 sodimm modules you find. In just the last few years we have seen HDDs hit over 20 terabytes, seen the number of platters being squeezed into a single hard drive casing reach more than 10 and the performance and durability of these drives somehow continue to improve too! Still, one area that we have seen very little change in over the years is the price per terabyte of most HDDs. Despite the range of capacities available from most HDD brands (Seagate, WD, Toshiba, etc), the cost of the latest and largest HDDs still maintains a hefty price tag, whilst the smaller capacity drives (still broadly keeping their lower price point) are more readily available, occasionally on offer and this leads alot of data storage buyers to ask themselves - Is it better to buy a small number of MASSIVE hard drives or a larger number of SMALLER HDDs? Thanks to modern development and efficient evolution of RAID (redundant array of independent disk) management in NAS and DAS systems*, alongside storage enclosures now ranging from as little as 2 Bay desktop case scale all the way upto 24-60 Bay rackmounts, it is actually quite easy to achieve the same amount of capacity of a handful of 'max capacity' drives with a smaller cluster of more affordable smaller drives. So, today I want to look into the benefits/downfalls of either setup and hopefully help you decide whether you need to opt for bigger or smaller hard drives in your data storage setup in 2023 onwards.
