Colombo is a fantastic city, vibrant, and calm and relaxing all the at the same time, and an array of delicious food. Breakfast roti - We started in the morning for a classic Sri Lankan food breakfast, roti, stuffed with egg, chopped up and topped with curry sauce and dall. It was delicious, especially followed with ginger tea. Total price - 200 LKR ($1.12) Milano Hotel (Restaurant) - For lunch, Ruzaina and I went to eat at one of her favorite Sri Lankan local restaurants serving a mix of rice and curry. Highly recommended. Total price - 760 LKR ($4.24) New Paris Hotel - One of my favorite Sri Lankan foods is hoppers, and more specifically egg hoppers - a combinations of rice flour batter and coconut milk, fried in a rounded skillet and topped with an egg. Egg hoppers - 40 LKR ($0.22) each Pettah - We continued this Sri Lankan street food tour to Pettah, a busy business district of Colombo. We met up with Abram: 🤍 to do some more eating. Fruit - 100 LKR ($0.56) - First we stopped to eat some pickled and candied fruit. I especially liked the black pepper rub on some of the fruit like the pineapple. Bombay Sweetmeat Mart - One of the popular local Sri Lankan things to eat in Pettah is faluda and samosas. Pretty good, but I’m not huge on faluda. Total price - 320 LKR ($1.79) Intestines and chicken necks - 390 LKR ($2.18) - Next we stopped to eat intestines and tripe, and chicken necks. All of it was pretty tasty, my kind of snack. Brains - 660 LKR ($3.68) - Next up on this Sri Lankan street food tour, we had a huge bite of brains, all of us. Galle Face - Finally, to end this Sri Lankan food tour, we headed to the most iconic area of Colombo - Galle Face. In the evening you’ll find food vendors setting up, selling snacks and quick meals. Isso Vadai - 200 LKR ($1.12) - are fried little fritters of shrimp and crab, and it’s something you’ve got to try. I ended with special kottu roti - 600 LKR ($3.35). Add cooking oil and mix with curry powder. Place the pork slices into the pan. Add turmeric powder, roasted curry powder, chili powder, black pepper, salt, cardamom, garlic paste, Garcinia cambogia, a liquid mixed with oil, cinnamon, ginger, garlic, fried lemongrass and curry leaves.Stir and cook for around 20 minutes. 🇱🇰JACKFRUIT CURRY: Chop the jackfruit flesh into small pieces. Place pieces into a pan, then add coconut milk, chopped onions, green chilies, curry leaves and Pandan leaves. Add salt, turmeric powder and curry powder. Add some pieces of cinnamon and mustard paste.Mix and cook for around 20 minutes. Add more coconut milk. JASINTA JOSEPH 🇱🇰CRAB CURRY: Pour coconut milk onto the cut crabs, then add liquid salt, tamarind juice, Jaffna curry powder, chopped onions, curry leaves, and ginger-garlic paste. Put the pot on the fire and cook for 20 minutes. Mix the curry. Add more coconut milk. Cook for 15 minutes. 🇱🇰STIR-FRIED CUTTLEFISH: Place fenugreek and fennel seeds in hot coconut oil. Add garlic and mix. Add curry leaves, chopped onions, liquid salt, and green chilies and put into the pot. Keep mixing. Place the cuttlefishes in and add salt liquid, ginger- garlic paste. Mix and close the lid. Add Jaffna curry powder and tamarind juice. Mix and allow it to cook for 15 minutes. 🇱🇰RAAL SODI (SHRIMP CURRY SOUP): Pour coconut milk into a pot with chopped onions, green chilies, salt liquid, and turmeric powder. Squeeze chopped tomatoes and put them into the pot with lime juice. Place the pot on the fire and then put shrimp into the pot. Cook for 15 minutes. 🇱🇰STRING HOPPER: Add hot water to liquid salt and pour into rice flour. Mix well. Place the dough into a string hopper maker. Some of the best crabs in Sri Lanka come from Trincomalee. Much of the culture and people of Trincomalee are Tamil, and the food and culture reflects that. King of Crabs - First we went to visit the main crab dealer of Trincomalee where he pulled out some fresh crabs from the lagoon. We ended up buying 3 KG of crab - 5,500 LKR ($30.68) to bring back to the house to cook. At the house, the family had already prepared a selection of Sri Lankan Tamil food dishes, that were vibrant and ready to be eaten, but they immediately got started cooking the crab. The crab cooking was simple, but heavily relied on their own family blend of masala spice mixture. All the dishes were served over a banana leaf plate, each with its own color and vibrancy. It was an incredible meal, so much delicious food and such a variety. I loved it. It was a perfect was to spend a day learning about Sri Lankan Tamil food in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. One of the top places to eat Sri Lankan crab curry is The Station, a seafood restaurant and bar along the ocean in Colombo. During out best of Sri Lankan food tour (🤍 this was the first meal we had, and it was outstanding. I met up with Uchith (🤍 Nick (🤍 and Lakki (🤍 who showed me the restaurant and took me to the kitchen to watch as they made their entire family recipe for Sri Lankan crab curry, using huge 1.5 kg. Sri Lankan mud crabs. It was fascinating and a learning experiences to watch all the different steps and the complicated ingredients used in their recipe. As I kept watching the Sri Lankan crab curry being made, I could hardly contain my excitement or mouth juices! Our entire group came, and they started bringing out more dishes - not just the Sri Lankan crab curry, but river prawns fried in black pepper, and spiny lobster hollowed out and re-added to its shell. It was stunningly good. Along with Sri Lankan food, The Station also has a few of their own unique, Sri Lankan fusion seafood dishes, including favorites like hot butter squid. Sri Lankan crab curry - we had one pan of their original Sri Lankan family recipe crab curry, and one pan of their extra spicy crab curry. Both were outstanding, but I loved the original for the spice blend and balance and how all the juices soaked up into the crab, it was outstanding. Sri Lankan crab curry: 🤍 Best of Sri Lanka food tour with The Hungry Tourist: 🤍 T-shirts and caps: 🤍 Colombo to Weligama, Sri Lanka - On Day 2 of the Best of Sri Lanka Food Tour with The Hungry Tourist (🤍 we had lunch first in Colombo, before driving to the Southern coast of Sri Lanka, near Weligama. Along the way, we stopped to taste a bunch of local Sri Lankan fruit, including plenty of delicious durian. Mayura Hotel - Northern Sri Lankan food - I had no idea what to expect this day, I didn’t even really know the plan other than driving to Weligama. But we first headed into the busy Pettah area of Colombo for some serious Sri Lankan food from Northern Sri Lanka. Along with serving banana leaf rice and curry with a variety of different curries and seafoods, they also specialized in spicy omelets. The food was incredibly delicious, all the different curries, wrapped up with rice, and smothered in spicy omelet. Weligama, Sri Lanka - The drive from Colombo to Weligama was about 2 hours, and once we arrived to the Southern coast of Sri Lanka, we noticed a truck full of durian. Durian is the King of Fruits, and anytime you see it, you have to stop. We stopped and ate a few durians, which were excellent and bought some to go as well. Just a few hundred meters up the road, we stopped again for another fruit stop to taste of of Sri Lanka’s bounty of fruit. Delicious. Zephyr Restaurant & Bar - Again for dinner, all I knew is that we were going to go to the beach and eat a meal on the beach. Zephyr Restaurant & Bar is actually quite a touristy restaurant, but Ruzaina had arranged a special local meal, including all southern Sri Lankan food. The meal was unbelievably good, dish after dish kept coming, including huge prawns and Sri Lankan crab. It was a meal to remember. Despite how tricky it may sound, our Brother is quite skilled at employing his usual tricks to demonstrate his sweet side to my Grandma or to me when he desired to have his favourite meal prepared by either of us! He came today as well, bringing two pots of freshly made buffalo milk curd, asking our Grandmother to prepare Buriyani(Biryani). By offering to make the curry leaf sambol which is must when Biryani, Those days When we had a visitor or two, Grandmother used to make biriyani at least once per month or two. I don’t like to see Grandmother exerting her self toiling with heavy clay pots and pans in the kitchen. Because now Grandmother is not strong physically! That is why I promised to cook the Buriyani for Brother! Yet I can’t stand his annoying regulations after doing the cook for him. He said that he is not going to eat the Biriyani if it’s not up to Grandmothers taste. Though Biryani originated in India, when it is In Sri Lanka, "Biriyani" the name has changed into "Buriyani" and it is traditionally prepared in a somewhat distinct manner. We utilise our own spices like mace, fennel seeds, pandan leaves, and curry leaves in place of star anise and bay leaves etc. We use short grain rice like Samba instead of long grain Basmati rice. We cook the rice with a curry that has a chicken flavour rather than cooking it with chicken and stock. Additionally, we add ghee to the rice in such a way that the rich buttery flavour of the ghee added when steam cooking each grain of rice will improve the flavour of the rice. In addition, unlike the raita salad made with cow's curd, for a salad to accompany the biriyani, we don't mix in any curd. Even our curry leaves sambol, which is made with fresh coconut, has taken the place of the customary mint chutney of India. The delicious Biriyani pairs perfectly with a side dish of any chutney and a mixed vegetable dish made with carrots, potatoes, and green peas. Lettuce, pineapple slices and large onion slices added to the rice as a garnish improve the dish's appearance and flavour. In any case, I was relieved that I had finally mastered the art of making a delicious Biriyani that lived up to my Brother's expectations of my Grandmother's original, delectable Buriyani. I must share another incredible and very interesting story with you all. My stunning island paradise, which is surrounded by the Indian Ocean, is blessed with a highly rich culture that has long since travelled towards our contemporary future through connecting with the world's heritage. Our island paradise's prime location along the historic Silk Road, which connects the east and the west, has greatly enriched us with both authentic local traditions and cultures from around the world. Since historical days, We are indeed blessed and lucky to be a country that is uniquely and geographically located in the ancient Silk Road that merged the east and the west, at the same time Sri Lanka became very fortunate to experience and be part of very rare opportunity of being enriched with so many international cultural diversification! Above all internationally rich culture and traditions, our neighbouring country India takes such very special place, not merely because it’s position as our immediate neighbour but Sri Lanka shares unique similarities of cultural values and diversities with India. I have the same perception about our cuisines as well. Even this delicious biriyani story also holds such similarity! But the story changes a bit when sailing it into Sri Lanka, crossing all the seven seas. I made sure to learn Grandmother’s perfect Biriyani recipe without a tiniest mistake. Our Brother’s complimentary words are the best evidence for it. My sincere gratitude and appreciation for India for gifting us such salivating and richly delicious dish and for my dear Grandmother for teaching me how to cook this biriyani as "Buriyani" in our own special Sri Lankan way! The shape and the colorful shades of the Cocoa amaze everyone. Reddish brown Cocoas are bit bigger than the ones in green and yellow shades.The pulp of Cocoa should be scraped and spread on a tray and let it ferments for a week alike. Then you will not be able to see any white nibs. Now, wash well to off the pulp and spread it on a tray to dry under sunlight. Take the dried Cocoa seeds and fry it on a pan. Then peel the seeds and pound them in a mortar. Later take a strainer to sift them and separate the flour. Though this was the easiest homemade remedy we could use to get Cocoa powder, way of getting Cocoa powder through machines is completely different. I prepared hot Wandu Appa (a sweet) mixed with homemade cocoa powder and cashews for Teatime. The steamed Wandu Appa split into four, were just like the ripe sprouted cotton fruits.Father used to enjoy Grand Mother’s delicious Wandu, Lawariya, Pittu, Halapa (Some unique sweets), So he will be over the moon to try these Wandu Appa. 🥧😋 We all love to eat a paste (Thalapa) cooked with Cocoa powder, rice flour, treacle and coconut milk. This time I thought of changing the recipe. I added fresh milk, brown sugar, cardamom power, dark chocolate, china moss and Cocoa powder and mixed with hot water. Later, I put them into cups and kept to take them for dessert on next day. 😍 The upside down chocolate top splits and spew out just like a volcano spews out in a volcanic eruption. That gives a terrifying view for a moment and it was astonishing. Now, it looks like a silent valley. Father and Mother peacefully enjoy the chocolate milk in that valley. They really loved it. 🥰 I thought of making honey cones (name of a sweet) today evening. My brother and I were so greedy to eat honey cones in the childhood. First, we have to mix rice flour, wheat flour, salt and turmeric powder together with water to make the dough. Then, mould the dough in to cones with the help cinnamon woods and deep-fry them in the oil. Later, caramel the sugar and pour the caramel on to the cone. Kandy by Sri Lankan bites is one of highest rated Sri Lankan Sydney Restaurant on Google and boy they did not disappoint. This is everything we had 1. Short Eats – Fish Patties and Pan Rolls 2. Jerked Chicken Wings 3. Devilled Pork Curry 4. Curry and rice – with 4 vegetable curries, coconut sambal (pol sambol), brinjal, tempered green beans, deep fried boiled eggs and fried chicken wings! 5. Egg Hoppers with 4 curries 6. When we were children, this wonderful tropical Dragon fruit didn't exist in Sri Lanka and of course in the world. But soon after it was introduced to Sri Lanka recently, it became so well-known and adored by all. In our hamlet, the dragon fruit is a highly popular fruit. Brother Thusitha has a sizable dragon fruit farm not far from our home. Actually, he invited me to visit and gather whatever I choose because the current dragon fruit harvest was thriving and prosperous. Anyone who looked at them would find it attractive because they resembled gorgeous red balloons and were also plumped. This time, Brother Thusitha grew a different variety with white flesh in bit of pink in outer layer. I had never previously made jam with dragon fruit. In contrast to the previous jam I produced from various other fruits, I suddenly observed while creating the jam that its tint was pale. I unexpectedly noticed the blue butterfly pea blossoms that were looking at me in vase, like they asking me to put them in the jam, so it was just a coincidence. The brilliant peacock blue colour of the jam was created when the lovely blue of the blue butterfly pea flower was blended with the yellow tint of the jam. When compared to other jams, it'd bit of slimy and even the texture of this dragon fruit jam was quite unique, and the colour was further accentuated by the dragon fruit seeds. Our Brother took a long time to prepare one of his mocktails as I was making the jam. I cautiously moved over to that side to check why he was taking so long to bring the drink. I was enthralled to see that he had put a lot of time and work into slicing the dragon fruits and the yellow water melon(honey melon) into incredibly little bits, and his beverage was stunning with an arresting rose colour. I was quite intrigued about how he achieved this brilliant shade, and he responded by explaining that he boiled lemon and dragon fruit skins to produce a stunning rose hue. His beverage was also incredibly tasty and reviving. I had the idea to add some dragon fruit jam to an entirely different dish to make it unique and international. I obtained some imported fruits through Uncle Siriwardena from Negombo as my ingredients for this new international dessert. When I looking the dessert that I had made it by incorporating plums and red and black grapes, I was filled with joy and satisfaction. I was overcome with joy when I heard my Brother's sincere remarks about how good the dessert was. Of course, I kept my inside happiness hidden from him as knowing my brother, he could refrain from complimenting any of my other delectable dishes in the future, thinking that I will be proud of his constant compliments.
