High in the north, in Swedish Lapland, mighty moose feel at home. In the east, near the Russian border, Lake Saimaa in Finland is home to one of the rarest seal species in the world. Gotska Sandön is the most remote place in the southern island paradise of the Baltic Sea. In the west, mountains and fjords dominate the landscape. Today, arctic foxes live again on the Hallingskarvet plateau. In all these places, nature conservationists are working with great enthusiasm for Scandinavia's hidden paradises. In this episode the dark season begins in the North. As we journey through the breathtaking scenery of Northern Norway, Sweden and Finland autumn colors arrive to the landscape. Starting on the Lofoten Islands, we venture further North towards Trømso and the Lyngen Alps where we find atmospheric fog-clad forests, towering glaciers and cozy mountain huts. Leaving Norway behind, we find ourselves in the heart of Swedish Lapland to hike out into the wilderness to find a remote valley with vibrant autumn colors and gaze at the seasons first show of Aurora, the Northern Lights! In Finnish Lapland we experience mesmerizing sunrises on glassy lakes and moody forests with fog wrapping around the treetops. Ending up on the Lofoten Islands again, we hike out to enjoy the last bit of sun, before the North goes into the polar night. From here we embark on a lengthy drive southward, spanning almost 3,000 km back to Germany. Here we prepare for another trip North, to experience a real arctic winter! Hygge is a Danish term defined as “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” In the past year, this concept of Scandinavian coziness has made inroads with an international audience. At least six books about hygge were published in the United States this year, with more to come in 2017. Author of the international best-seller The Little Book of Hygge, Meik Wiking takes VICE News on a hygge tour of Copenhagen coffee shops, library gardens and wine bars that epitomize the lifestyle trend. What if Scandinavia (Norway, Denmark & Sweden) united into United Scandinavia? What would their economy be like? Would it be one of the most powerful countries? What exactly is Scandinavia? The countries of Scandinavia are Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. We might also refer to the Scandinavian Peninsula, or Fennoscandia, which also comprises Finland and parts of Russia. Moreover, we talk about Nordic countries, and these include Iceland, Greenland and Faroe Islands. But today we are talking about three countries alone, and they are Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The countries have similar customs and cultures, and the languages are not far apart. The EU tells us the citizens of all these countries will likely be able to read each other’s language, although Swedes and Norwegians can have trouble understanding spoken Danish, even though the Danish and Norwegian languages are the most similar. Now, let’s look at what would happen if those countries finally came together, in this episode of the Infographics Show, What if Scandinavia United? What do Democratic Socialists like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez want America to look like? They say they want America to emulate Scandinavian countries like Denmark and Sweden. But do their proposed policies reflect that? Or do they point down a darker path? Debbie D’Souza, a native Venezuelan and political commentator, investigates. FOLLOW us! China under Mao—bad. Sweden, Denmark, Norway—good. This is the socialist report card as it currently stands. Never mind that Venezuela, Cuba, Zimbabwe, the Soviet Union, Mao’s China were once good. Once they go bad, they stay bad and are quickly forgotten, lost down the memory hole. But those Nordic paradises? They never let you down. Whenever Bernie, the “Squad”, and the growing horde of Democratic Socialists ever get cornered, there’s always “like Denmark” to come to the rescue. “No, no, we don’t want anything like what’s going on in Venezuela. Denmark is what we have in mind.” Except they don’t. And it’s time we all figured this out. Before it’s too late. Here’s what you need know about Scandinavian countries: They are capitalist in wealth creation and socialist in wealth distribution. They have low corporate taxes, around 20 percent, no higher than in America. Unlike America, neither Norway nor Sweden nor Denmark has a government-set minimum wage. Most make it very easy to start a new business. Most have private healthcare and education options. Yes, the Nordic countries have an expansive welfare state, but everyone pays into the system—rich, middle class and poor. Nobody escapes the tax man: because nobody escapes the 25% value added tax. This sales tax, a tax on what you buy is regressive, meaning it falls much more heavily percentage-of-income-wise on the poor and middle class than it does on the rich. This concept is a complete non-starter for American socialists who want only “the rich” to pay more, even though America’s tax system is already steeply progressive: “The rich,” the top 10 percent, pay about 70% of all income taxes. But for the socialist it never seems to be enough. So, if the American Left has rejected the Scandinavian model, which model is it embracing? Well, where do the leading figures on the American Left, from Sean Penn to Michael Moore and Bill Ayers go when they want to praise socialism? Here’s a hint: When was the last time you saw Bernie in Copenhagen? First it was the Soviet Union. Then it was Cuba. Then it was Venezuela. Venezuelan socialism, like current American socialism, is based on sowing social division. The Left in Venezuela divided the country not merely between the rich and the poor, but white and black or brown—between Europeans, Africans, and indigenous people. Hugo Chavez made much of his black and Indian roots. Venezuelan socialists were bringing down statues of Columbus long before American leftists did. Once you establish the villain class, taking away their wealth is not hard to do. Whatever Chavez and now his successor Nicolas Maduro wanted, they took—or, if you care about moral clarity, they stole—always, like the French and Russian Revolutions, in the name of “equality.” For the complete script visit 🤍
Tracking the migration of humans isn’t easy , but genetics is helping us uncover new information at breathtaking speed. We know that our species originated in Africa and likely reached Europe from the southeast no later than 42,000 years ago. During the last ice age some 33,000-20,000 years ago, when a permanent ice sheet covered northern and parts of central Europe, modern humans in southwest Europe were isolated from groups further to the east. When the ice sheet retreated, some of these hunter gatherers eventually colonized Scandinavia from the south about 11,700 years ago, making it one of the last areas of Europe to be inhabited. But exactly who these individuals were and how they got there has remained a puzzle for researchers. Now we have sequenced the genomes of seven hunter gatherers, dated to be 9,500-6,000 years old, to find out. One of the reasons the origins of the first Scandinavians is so enigmatic is a major shift in stone tool technology that appeared soon after they got there. This new technology seemed to have had an origin in eastern Europe and it has been an open question how it reached Scandinavia? Our interdisciplinary research team combined genetic and archaeological data with reconstructions of the ice sheets to investigate the earliest people of the Scandinavian peninsula. We extracted DNA for sequencing from bones and teeth of the seven individuals from the Norwegian Atlantic coast and the Baltic islands of Gotland and Stora Karlsö. We then compared the genomic data with the genetic variation of contemporary hunter gatherers from other parts of Europe. To our surprise, hunter gatherers from the Norwegian Atlantic coast were genetically more similar to contemporaneous populations from east of the Baltic Sea, while hunter gatherers from what is Sweden today were genetically more similar to those from central and western Europe. One could say that – in Scandinavia at that time – the geographic west was the genetic east and vice versa. This contradiction between genetics and geography can only be explained by two main migrations into Scandinavia. It would have started with an initial pulse from the south – modern day Denmark and Germany – that took place just after 11,700 years ago. Then there would have been an additional migration from the northeast, following the Atlantic coast in northern Finland and Norway becoming free of ice.
