I just spent 2 days living with the Mundari Tribe in rural SOUTH SUDAN and it was an incredible and humbling experience. After spending most of my life in busy cities, it was so refreshing to witness how the Mundari's live such simple, genuine lives - far removed from the stresses of the Western World - yet they remain so happy and so close to nature. The Mundaris are known as the “Cow Tribe” because they live among their cows (literally, thousands of them) and utilize their cattle for food, trade, dowry and survival. After spending 48 hours with the Mundari tribe, I learned that it's the simple moments in life that matter most - like family time and laughter. Offer money to a Mundari man and he will tell you to bring a cow instead. Mundari men have this odd, yet interesting culture where they bath their hair in cow urine, giving it a yellow-orange color. The Mundari tribe is a small ethnic group from the Republic of South Sudan, numbering between 70,000 and 100,000 people. South Sudan, the world’s youngest country, gained independence from the Republic of the Sudan in 2011 after a 21-year civil war. The Mundari are one of the ethnic groups indigenous to the Nile valley Nilotic. Their main homeland is approximately 75 kilometres north of Juba, the capital of South Sudan. Their lands are bounded on the east by the White Nile, an important source of water for livestock. The Mundari follow a mixture of Christian and animistic beliefs, with symbols playing an important role. As for many people in the area, the Mundari culture is transmitted orally in songs, dance, poems and other body expressions that reflect good, generosity, and other core values. Ritual scarification is an important part of cultural identity. Men must undergo initiation rites where initiates live together in nature and spend three months with a village elder, away from the community. Mundari men take up wrestling as a serious hobby from a very young age. They regularly organise wrestling competitions, and the best proponents keep going until they are too old to compete. CATTLE CULTURE The Mundari are agro-pastoralists with an economy centered on agriculture and herding livestock. Their famous, massive-horned Ankole-Watusi cattle are considered the ‘kings of the cattle’. They are part of the Sanga family of African cattle breeds which originated over 2,000 years ago from a combination of the Egyptian longhorn cattle of Africa and Zebu longhorns originally from India. Sanga cattle spread throughout eastern Africa, and many different breeds developed. Some studies suggest that the big horns of the Ankole-Watusi are an adaptation to hot climates, facilitating the dispersal of excess body heat. While elders from 38 years old and maternal relatives settle in villages with beautiful huts, the young men and women, teens and children go to cattle camps to tend livestock, moving according to the rhythm of rainy seasons. Sometimes the herds can number as many as 850 animals, and finding enough forage for such large herds in arid areas necessitates constant movement. At the end of the dry season, camps are pitched around the Nile, the only place still sufficiently green to accommodate the appetite of their livestock. In Mundari culture, like for many tribes of the region, cattle play an important role in religion, birth and marriage. They are symbols of wealth and power. Every life event includes a reference to cows, the lives of which can be sometimes deemed more important than those of humans. Traditionally, Ankole-Watusi cows are considered sacred, with an owner’s wealth counted in live animals. Unfortunately, cattle are also the main source of conflict. Clashes seldom arise over common resources such as land but rather over animals and their ownership. Before the civil war, each Ankole-Watusi was worth as much as $500. This was the reference value used to calculate the bride price paid to a woman’s family. Following the end of the war, the number of middle-aged men in search of wives dramatically increased. This had a direct impact as it doubled the bride price from an average of 20 cows per bride to 40. CATTLE CAMPS In a cattle camp, everyone plays their role. The men lead the cows into the fields during the day and regroup them in the camp before sunset. The women clean and prepare food for everyone. The children clean the ground of the camp every morning by collecting the dung and burning it at sunset. Ashes are then used as a natural antiseptic to protect the skin of the people and cows from insects and the sun. The Mundari also use ash as talcum to massage their cattle twice a day and as toothpaste for themselves Cattle urine is used to wash hands, faces, and teeth and bleach hair. The Mundari also drink it in the belief that cow urine infuses purity. They also combine urine with ashes to polish the magnificent horns of the cattle.

The Mundari Tribe of South Sudan that shower with Cow Urine The Mundari are a small ethnic group of South Sudan and part of the Karo people, one of the Nilotic tribes, of South Sudan. Karo group is composed of cattle headers and agriculturalists. Other Karo tribes apart from the Mundari are; Bari, Pojulu, Kakwa, Kuku and Nyangwara. *Culture The Mundari, like other nilotic tribes, are very cattle-oriented. Cattle serves as food, a form of currency and a mark of status. They live in symbiosis with their cattle and nothing is more important for them than their cows. Offer money to a Mundari man and he will tell you to bring a cow instead. In Mundari, Marriages are arranged by the prospective groom offering cattle to the bride's family, and husbands are allowed to take as many wives as they can cater for. Mundari men have this odd, yet interesting culture where they bath their hair in cow urine, giving it a yellow-orange color. In common with other nilotic tribes in Sudan, the Mundari practice ritual scarification as a rite of passage into adulthood for young men. The typical Mundari scar pattern consists of two sets of three parallel lines, each on either side of the forehead, extending in a downward slope and converging in the middle. In the Mundari cattle camps, Kids collec not the fresh cow dung and put it into piles which are then set on fire. Those fire are useful as they repel the numerous and voracious flies and mosquitoes of the South Sudanese countryside. The Mundari also use the ash created by these fires to rub on themselves and their cattle, creating a protection against mosquitoes. Their cattle are sent off for grazing all day long and come back to the camp before day fall when they are cleaned and tied to poles. The young kids sleep with the cows as well as guardians, which are often armed with AK-47s. Mundari men have to go through a rite of initiation where all the initiates live together and spend three months with a village elder, away from the community. During that time, they must live in nature and stay naked. Once their initiation is finished, they can kill a cow and they can therefore be referred to as men. Mundari take up wrestling as a serious hobby from a very young age. Everyday, the young mundaris organise wrestling competitions and the best ones keep going at it until they are too old for it, with some clans having some countrywide heroes. *Tribal land The traditional Mundari tribal lands are located roughly 75 kilometers north of Juba, the capital of South Sudan, and are centered on the town of Terekeka in the state of Central Equatoria. Their lands are bounded on the east by the White Nile and extend west to Laka Ma'di in Western Equatoria state, an area roughly 100 by 75 kilometers in size. The land, like much of South Sudan, is predominantly flat and marked by occasional isolated large hills. The low-lying land contains many rivers and lakes and is prone to flooding during the rainy season. The soil is predominantly clay-based, causing drainage and water retention problems, and provides a very fertile basis in support of cattle grazing. *The main settlements in Mundari land are; Terekeka, Gemaiza, Mangalla, Muni, Tombe, Tindalo, Tali, Rego, Tijor, Rijong, Koweri, and Nyori

Mundari is a relatively small ethnic group that comprises South Sudan and the Karo people from the Nilotic region. Their tribal lands are located about 75 kilometers north of Juba, the capital of South Sudan, and right at the center of Terekeka, in the state of Central Equatorial. The Mundari people are cattle-herders and agriculturalists from Karo, Bari, Pojulu, Kakwa, Kuku, and Nyangwara. Their land is bordered to the north by the Bor Dinka, and to the south by the Bari. To their east is the White Nile, while to their west is Laka Ma'di. Like much of South Sudan, the Mundari land is predominantly flat and mainly characterized by isolated large hills. The low-lying Mundari land has many lakes and rivers, which makes it prone to flooding during the rainy season. Their clay-based soil causes drainage and water retention problems, however, on the good side, makes a highly fertile basis for cattle grazing. Like other Nilotic tribes, the Mundari people are cattle-oriented. Cattle, to the Mundari people, means quite a lot. To many of them, it`s a source of food, to some others, it`s a form of currency, while many see it as a measure of status. The Mundari and the Bor Dinka sometimes engage in perennial cattle wars during the dry season. Beyond cattle rearing, they engage in fishing, which they do mainly with nets and spears. They`re also ago-pastoralist, with their economy centered on subsistence agriculture and herding of livestock.

Tariq Zaidi (🤍 has spent the last 10 years photographing tribal and indigenous people in over 30 countries in Africa. He visited South Sudan, the newest and arguably most unstable nation in the world, where he photographed the little-documented Mundari tribe. Since conflict erupted in South Sudan in December 2013, at least 50,000 people are estimated to have been killed, 2.2 million have been displaced and parts of the country have been pushed to the brink of famine. Amid this humanitarian crisis, the nomadic Mundari people continue to herd their cattle across the banks of the Nile, dealing with the threat of unexploded landmines and violent cattle raids from neighbouring tribes. Each year in South Sudan, about 350,000 cows and bulls are stolen and more than 2500 people are killed by cattle rustlers. It is hard to overstate the importance of cattle to the Mundari people. Their animals are everything - wealth, status, sustenance and dowry - and they guard them with their lives. They farm a breed of cattle called Ankole-Watusi – a distinctive white animal with curved horns, also known as ‘the cattle of kings’. With a single cow or bull worth up to $500, it’s not surprising that Mundari men stand watch over their herd with rifles, despite a recent attempt by the government to disarm warring tribes. “Their cows are the most important thing in their lives,” says Zaidi. “And they will protect them at all costs.” In search of truly unique images, Tariq continues to travel around the world.
