You'll want to tick the "Enable steamplay for all other titles" checkbox in the settings, Steamplay tab. To check for compatibility, just go to protonDB.com, search for the game you want, and look at the rating. Just by looking at user reports that have similar hardware to yours, so in general the same kind of GPU, you can get all the tweaks you might need to run the game. If it's a launch argument, you can just add it by right clicking a game in your library, going to Properties, and pasting that argument in the launch options line. If it's a specific version of Proton, you can change that version in the "COmpatibiity" tab, by ticking the "force the use of a specific version" checkbox. To install Proton GE, you can head over to the GE Proton Github page. There, you click on the releases box, and you can just download the version you need. Extract it in your .steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d folder (create it if needed) What about the Epic Games Store? Well, we have an amazing solution here as well. The best one on Linux is using an unofficial client called Heroic. TO install Heroic, either search your software store, or, if it doesn't appear there, head over to their website to grab one of the versions they offer. Now, let's move on to Origin, and Ubisoft connect. These other launchers are best handled through Lutris. To get started with adding your Origin or Ubisoft games, just click the Origin, or Ubisoft icon in the sidebar, and then the small "user" icon next to it. You'll get a login window, and once you're singed in, your list of games will appear in the main window. Click a game, and then the install button in the bottom of the app to install it. Then there's battle.net. This one doesn't have an unofficial client, and doesn't have easy integrations like what Lutris offers, but you can still install it easily, through Lutris itself. Just click the main menu, and then "Add Game". Click "search lutris" and then type Battle.net, and then click install, and follow the prompts. For GoG, you can just use the Heroic Games Launcher I already mentioned. It supports using your GoG account, by clicking on the Manage Accounts button in the sidebar. And then, there's FSR. This is a tool from AMD, but you can use it on any GPU, and it lets you render a game at a lower resolution, and upscale it to the native resolution of your display, so you're saving some GPU and CPU power, but the end result looks pretty close to the real thing. For example, you could play a Tomb Raider game, rendering it at 720p, but it would be upscaled to 1080p to mach your monitor. With Linux, you can add FSR support to basically every game, even the ones that don't support it natively. FOr Steam, you'll need to use GE Proton, and add this argument: WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 %command% You can just add it in the game's properties, in the launch options box For Heroic, use GE Proton, and check the "Enable FSR" box in the game's settings, in the Other tab. On Lutris, just check the "Enable AMD FidelityFX super resolution" switch in the Runner Options.

Gaming in Linux has had issues in the past, but thanks to the Steam Deck and Valve's commitment to making it better, I finally feel Linux Gaming is good enough that I can finally ditch Windows! I demo five games (including two with ray tracing) in various launchers including Steam, Blizzard's Battle.net, and Epic Games to show how good performance is with an AMD Radeon 6700 XT GPU. Also, thanks to Wine based software such as Bottles, installation of these launchers is super easy. This video is a general overview, not a detailed step-by-step guide, but I also give some tips and suggestions on the software packages you should install to get the best performance. It's a venerable piece of software, that predates even the first release of the Linux kernel, by almost a decade, and X11 is virtually unmaintained now. And so that's why Wayland was started in 2008. In terms of advantages, it eliminates screen tearing, it lets you have multiple monitors with different refresh rates and different scaling factors, and it's more secure. 🤍 The Wayland protocol still lacks network transparency: Wayland doesn't support running a program on a computer, and displaying it on another. Some stuff also isn't supported yet, on Wayland OR on X11, for example HDR. Support for fractional scaling has just recently been added, and isn't fully supported by all major Linux desktops and toolkits just yet. Wayland also doesn't support global shortcuts by default, but it's fixed through a desktop portal. And we need to look at desktop environments and window managers. GNOME is probably the one with the more robust Wayland support available right now: not the most feature complete, but the most robust. On KDE, Wayland support is a bit less solid, in my experience, Plasma 6 should be THE release with good Wayland support. As per other desktop environments: Cinnamon is just beginning, MATE hasn't started, but XFCE has published a roadmap of the things that already work, and the things that need to be worked on. Pantheon, the desktop for elementary OS, has an experiment wayland session that is, for now, not really usable, and Deepin doesn't seem to have any plans yet. You can use Sway, which is basically i3 but made for Wayland, with support for i3 config files, you have hyprland, based on the wlroots implementation, that seems to be the fastest moving tiling window manager for Wayland. If you use open source drivers, like the mesa drivers for Intel and AMD GPUs, or the Nouveau driver for nvidia, you're all good. These support everything you need, and work well with Wayland, just as well as on X.Org. But then, there are the proprietary nvidia drivers. And to be fair, they do work with Wayland. it took a long while, but it works, I've been using them on hybrid graphics laptops on GNOME and KDE, and on a desktop running Fedora for a long while, and it works. But it's also not the best experience. And since we're talking about GPUs, let's talk about gaming. Gaming on Wayland basically relies on X.org, with something called XWayland: it's and X11 server running inside of Wayland. There is a small performance impact depending on the game. It's not huge, but it's there, so if you're struggling to keep a smooth 60FPS, Xorg will be better. This is notably true with Nvidia drivers, which don't handle XWayland very well. For now, Wayland enforces Vsync everywhere, unless your monitor has adaptive sync, so stuff like Gsync of freesync. If you don't have that, then Vsync is, for now, mandatory. And finally, we have application support. All the latest Kirigami apps for KDE, or QT 5 and Qt 6 apps, or Libadwaita apps will handle Wayland well, and all the portals they need to interact well with other apps, screen sharing, and the like. Electron apps using a recent version of electron will also support Wayland, but a lot of electron apps still use an old version that doesn't support it properly. And older apps using GTK 2, or older versions of Qt also won't support Wayland. Some web browsers also don't run natively with Wayland.

Over time, we have observed numerous technological innovations since the advent of technology. One of the most remarkable advancements in recent times is the progress made in gaming on the Linux operating system. In the past, if you had inquired about the status of gaming on Linux, people would have dismissed the idea, claiming that playing AAA games on Linux was not feasible. However, the landscape has changed significantly today, all thanks to Valve's Proton technology and the introduction of the Steam Deck. This progress has dispelled the notion that Linux cannot be a competitive platform for gaming and has established Linux as a viable option for gamers worldwide. Hence, if you want to start your gaming journey on Linux, here are the best Linux distros for gaming. #linux #linuxdistro #ubuntu #linuxmint #gaming #linuxgaming #popos #garuda #nobara #regata #steam
