Get some cool drag & drop VFX here! ► 🤍 ◄ Avengers Endgame was definitely in store for some amazing VFX. Including a revamped “Professor Hulk”. Just look at the detail in the way the pores stretch and flex with his skin! Incredible! This sequence of Tony Stark, lost in space on the M-ship, was mostly done by Cinesite, who created the lonely exterior shots of the ship and retouched Nebula’s eyes to make them blacker. Her CG robotic arm was added by them too and they also did the visual effects for the sequence where she gets the orb and damages her arm in the process. Cinecite also took care of the chase between the Outriders and Hawkeye beneath the rubble of the Avengers’ base. Choreographing the interaction between these 8 limbed creatures was a pretty challenging. They created multiple animation cycles of the way the Outriders move, which included running, climbing, crawling and leaping. The scenes were blocked out first, which basically means key poses are created to establish timing and placement of characters and props in a given scene or shot and the animation was then later refined for each creature. One key aspect of Cinesite’s work was environments. For example, this shot was made up of CG buildings vehicles, and multiple bluescreen shots of extras positioned on cards placed in Nuke, to bulk out the shot. The sequence that involved Ant-Man giving Tony a “mild cardiac dysrhythmia” was also Cinesite’s doing... Now, personally, despite how disappointing the character was for some, the VFX work done on Professor Hulk was insane! What’s also insane is how many different VFX companies worked together on this move, 14! Framestore developed their Machine-learning technology in order to create a quick first pass animation that could be used to help filmmakers decide on the edit before beginning the process of refining. Keyframe animation was then deployed for over 60 shots of Professor Hulk. This procedure of capturing the performance was key for the animators. A new facial capture system was also created by ILM, specifically to make Smart Hulk look as close to actor Mark Ruffalo as possible. Getting the look right look and performance also involved scans, facial capture and hand animation of the actor, as well as some concept art for reference. Digital Domain and Weta Digital incorporated new proprietary software to put more detail into the face. Now, seeing as Hulk’s face a lot larger than Bruce’s, tiny changes to his face had a big effect on the performance. So, a new subset of facial shapes was built to give animators more control in the animation allowing them to achieve more complex, subtle expressions. When it came to shooting Captain America fighting his younger self, this was filmed on a green soundstage. Yep, everything other than the bridge floor they’re standing on and a set of stairs was greenscreen! The only problem was, all the detail added in the amazing CG set made it more confusing to follow the action on closeups. So, in order to get a cleaner silhouette of the Cap, they had to go back and sneakily do things like blur areas and add more atmosphere to make the Caps pop out more. For the Cap fighting the Cap, they filmed actor Chris Evans fighting a stunt double and had VFX company Lola track Evans’ face onto the stunt double’s face. And finally, for the portals scene in the final battle, before Tony Stark does the whole switcheroo with the infinity stones, showing them off like engagement rings, Weta Digital’s digital matte painting department created completely CG environments and compiled multiple passes that were each rendered through their respective portals with the same camera movement in order to key together and parallax in this incredible scene. In most modern films, filmmakers want Photorealism and for the VFX to be "Invisible". This requires more discipline, time, and money, both in principle photography and in post-production. In 300, a certain style was required and so photorealism was not necessary, making production cheaper and quicker. for example, for blood spatter to look real it has to be the correct amount, the correct color, and the correct texture, it has to spray in a realistic way and interact with light in a certain manner. When stylizing a film, these rules needn't apply, blood spatter can be any tone of red, any amount, the only rule is "Stay true to the style". The Oracle Girl For this scene, the actress was filmed "Wet for Dry" meaning the actress was filmed in a water tank in front of a blue screen, off set, this was done to achieve a supernatural, almost antigravity effect. She was shot with a high-speed camera so the director could apply certain speed ramps that the VFX then had to match. Screaming Death Monkey's VFX team were given the plates of the oracle girl on blue and a style frame that gave them the look and feel of how the lighting, sky, and smoke should be. The smoke and the "Oracles" clothes had to look and behave in a special way and interact with the "Oracle's" movements. The smoke was created using cloth dynamics in "Lightwave". A "Bone chain" was used to determine the location and animation of the smoke and the morph controlled how fast it was emitted from the lamps, after rendering, "Eyeon Fusion" was used for effects compositing, and "Fusion's" Grid Warp Tool was used to enhance and Clean-up the movement of the smoke. The Crush The Director wanted to interpret Frank Miller's book and translate it into 3 dimensions, to do this the team first identified the shots in the film they wanted to "Mimic" from the book, these shots were dubbed "Frank Frames" because they helped "Anchor" the film to Frank millers style and allowed for flexibility in between. A total of 10 different VFX vendors from 4 different countries were used so it was incredibly important to ensure that everyone knew exactly the style the director wanted. As part of the film's visual development, the director and his team tested almost everything that would be seen in the film from clothing and weapons to CG wounds and blood, all this was used to create a "Style Guide" which was then distributed to all the VFX vendors. It was in this Visual development period that the director and his team came up with an idea for an effect that would give the film its final style, and they called this effect "The Crush". It consists of "Crushing" the black content of the image and enhancing the color saturation to change the contrast ratio of the film, and every image in the film went through this post-image process. Elephant and Rhino Hydraulx was tasked with creating and animating the rhino and the elephant that appear in the movie. A Prop Rhino was built to be used on set and Hydraulx used this rhino as a basis for their CG version. In the directors "Style guide" there were Photoshop-style guides which were very large and very detailed and these were invaluable in allowing the team to quickly find the correct balance between real and comic book. Both animals were built and animated almost entirely in Maya and rendered using Hydraulx's separate render farm. Now, one of them you’ve probably heard of - and that's CGI humanoids - characters like Thanos or Tarkin or the blue people from Avatar - These guys tend to get a lot of coverage in the media these days for all their technical breakthroughs and how hard it is creating a photorealistic human But… There's also a second huge challenge… that no one really talks about… - and that is: the creation of CG animals. Because under the surface - These guys have almost the exact same same features as a CG humanaid - They’ve got muscles, and tissue and skin that all needs to be very carefully figured out by a massive team of artists. And on top of this, since things like the Lion King remake in 2019 - CG animals have exploded in popularity, to the point where they are filling the same positions narratively as these other CG characters - Now we have walking around, dancing, talking and emoting - and essentially carrying the entire story on their backs. So, As a VFX artist myself, and someone whose found themselves constantly going in and out of working on these CG animals over the last few years - I thought I should shine a spotlight behind the scenes workflows of these animals, and discuss the tremendous amount of work that goes into making them. The easiest way to make a model car look full size is to put it close to the camera and line it up with your background. This is an old Hollywood trick called ‘forced perspective’ - it’s all done in-camera and requires no editing or compositing at all. And I’ve made a separate video on how you can do this effect yourself. But of course this normally limits your car to staying still, and you can’t interact with it very much apart from walking behind it. So if you fancy a more advanced method, today we’re going to do some VFX compositing to make it look like I am actually driving this model car along a road! Just like when doing this effect totally in-camera, when choosing a model car to use the bigger the better, as we’re going to need to get our camera really close to the model. the scale of 1:18 gives a lot more detail than smaller models, and this effect will still probably not look 100% realistic unless you have an enormous model - in which case you might as well use a real car! And so I would really suggest this as being more of just a fun experiment. I’m going to be using this model of a 1964 Aston Martin DB5, which is the famous car used by James Bond, first seen in with Sean Connery in “Goldfinger”. So for this experiment you will need to get three shots - the background, the car, and the driver, and I would shoot them in that order. To get your background shot, you can get someone to drive you along a section on road I film out the window. I did this with a gimbal to keep the shot steady, and you could also do this with a phone or an action camera. Next you need to film the model car, and for this we used a green screen. Now the reason I suggest getting the background first is you now know where the sun and the shadows are, so you can try and match them when filming your model. I set this up with a bright light coming from behind and off to the left side to look like the sun, and I had a polystyrene bounce board on the other side to reflect a bit of this light back. You will also want to film in ‘deep focus’ meaning you’re trying to get as much of your model in focus at the same time, otherwise it will look tiny. This means you’ll need to change your aperture to the highest f-number you can see displayed. So that just leaves our shot of the driver. For this I took the model away, sat in front of the green screen on an apple box, and adjusted the lighting with a shadow over me to look like I was under the roof. Then I just tried to judge the angle, the height and the camera distance so that it would be a pretty good match for what the model looked like! This is pretty tricky and you’ll probably need a few tries at this, but with a bit of trial and error I was able to get something that I thought would work pretty well. And then that was everything filmed and it was time to try and put it together using Adobe After Effects! The first thing to do is to import your 3 clips onto After Effects, and then put them onto a timeline with the background layer at the bottom, then the car layer, and then the driver layer. Start by switching off the driver layer. Next you can select the car layer and use the Keylight effect to remove the green screen. Select the green colour to remove, change the view to Screen Matte, adjust the values under the Clip Black and White settings until it’s a pretty good key, and then switch back to Intermediate Result or Final Result to see how it looks. Next you can switch back on your driver layer, add Keylight once again and remove the background. Now you need to line this up with the car, and scale it so the driver appears the correct size.
