The online encyclopedia's decentralized, Hayekian approach provides a model for Elon Musk as he assumes control of Twitter. 🤍 - Wikipedia, "the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit," went from being a weird online experiment 21 years ago to one of the mainstays of the modern internet with astonishing speed. Even more astonishing, it has maintained its reputation and functionality since its founding, even as the rest of the social internet seems hellbent on tearing itself apart. As Twitter, Facebook, and others are consumed with controversy over moderation, governance, and the definition of free speech, Wikipedia continues to quietly grow in utility, trustworthiness, and comprehensiveness; there are now nearly 6.5 million articles on the English version alone and it has held its place in the top 15 most visited sites on the internet for well over a decade. Reason spoke with Wikipedia's founder, Jimmy Wales, who was predictably modest about what he got right. A key ingredient to Wikipedia's success is its high degree of decentralization. After this interview was conducted, Elon Musk made a bid to buy Twitter, bringing new salience to the battle over who controls the flow of information (and disinformation) online. Reason last spoke with Wales 15 years ago, and the resulting profile ended up becoming a source for Wales' own Wikipedia entry. At that time, we talked about the future of online speech, improving the algorithms that shape our lives, and the role that Friedrich Hayek played in Wales' thinking. You’d think that the most successful companies in the world invest good money for their logos to be picture-perfect, yet even Google isn’t immune to messing up a logo design. Pay attention to 10 super famous company logos that are hiding something or have design fails and mistakes in them. We all know what the White House looks like, and you’d think there’d be no possible difficulties recreating it in an image. However, there were at least 3 attempts to create a logo, all of which resulted in mistakes. Wikipedia’s logo representing knowledge has a really embarrassing mistake right in the middle of the image! You wouldn’t catch it unless you know Chinese, so we’ll let you in on the big secret. Some people saw a man bending over vomiting in the London Olympics logo, while others were joking that it looked like Lisa Simpson in a compromising position. Salvador Dali hired to design the Chupa Chups logo put the brand’s name on a bright daisy and insisted that the logo be placed on top of the wrapper so that everyone could see it. And it’s basically stayed the same since then! When asked about the imperfection of letter “G” in their logo, Google chose the best route a person can when explaining his or her mistakes. They simply said that they’re aware of the inaccurate “G”, but that was all part of the plan! This slight imperfection makes their image playful and approachable. Music: 🤍 TIMESTAMPS The White House 0:38 Wendy’s 1:29 Wikipedia 2:20 Hershey’s Kisses 3:28 The London Olympics 3:54 7-Eleven 4:42 Chupa Chups 5:17 Walt Disney 6:01 Pepsi 6:47 Google 7:17 SUMMARY -The designers of the White House’s logo made mistakes depicting the arch shape, mixed up the order of the windows and even lost pillars on the roof. -You might see nothing special in Wendy’s white and blue striped collar, but a closer look will reveal the word “mom” right in the center. -Wikipedia logo’s designer meant to write the Chinese word “wi”, but one tiny yet extra stroke made the symbol gibberish. -Lean your head towards your left shoulder, and you’ll get a sweet surprise: a chocolate kiss between the “K” and “I”. -Iranian participants in the London Olympic Games were upset by the peculiar style of the numbers 2012 because they read the word “Zion” in it. -All the letters in the word “eleven” in 7-Eleven logo are capitalized, except for one: the “n”. -The creator of Chupa Chups Spaniard Enric Bernat picked the most famous surrealist artist in the world Salvador Dali himself to design the new brand logo. -Those elegant swirls in the “W”, “i” and “y” in Disney logo look exactly like three sixes in a row. -If you wanna see what Pepsi can potentially do to you, just add a little circle on top of its logo, some arms and legs, and voila. -The letter “G” in Google logo doesn’t look the way it should. It’s not the complete perfect circle it’s supposed to be, and the inner circle is also far from ideal. What problems arise during training AI tools? AI companies like OpenAI are coming under fire for how AI tools are trained, and social media channels are pushing back. Reddit, which is often scraped to train language models, just announced it would charge for API access, in order to stop AI companies from training models on Reddit data without compensation. Additionally, Twitter recently made a similar move. And Elon Musk publicly threatened to sue Microsoft for, he says, “illegally using Twitter data” to train models. Other companies are sure to follow suit. An investigative report by the Washington Post recently found that large language models from Google and Meta trained on data from major websites like Wikipedia, The New York Times, and Kickstarter. The report raises concerns that models may be using data from certain sites improperly. In one example, the Post found models had trained on an ebook piracy site and likely did not have permission to use the data it trained on. #Shorts What if I told you that Tutankhamun had many health issues and died because of injuries? His mummy revealed he had a thigh bone fracture which was recent at the time of his death. There was no healing, and his fracture was comminuted . His cause of death is unknown, but he clearly had an injury before. He possibly fell from his chair or from a height, or he had a fight with an enemy or even an assassin. His sternum was removed at the time of embalming and the reason for that is unknown. DNA analysis of his blood remnants revealed he suffered from malaria. Murder by a blow to the head was theorized as a result of the 1968 x-ray which showed two bone fragments inside the skull. His leg fracture was perhaps as the result of a fall. He was the son of Akhenaten and his sister and because of inbreeding he had multiple genetic conditions. Tutankhamun had clubfoot and he was walking with a stick. Tutankhamun's mummy was CT scanned. The young king had a partially cleft hard palate and a mild case of scoliosis. Some researchers claimed he had gynecomastia or even Marfan syndrome.
