🤍 Kyudo is a martial art using the bow, but unlike other kinds of archery, the real aim is far more than merely hitting a target, and the bows have no sights. Focused on achieving correct posture and stance, with total awareness of oneself, the spirit of Kyudo is expressed by the term mushin – pure mind free from all distracting thoughts. To enter this state requires long and continuous training, and in Kyudo competitions, although points are scored by hitting the target, judges place more emphasis on good stance and calmness of spirit. Kyudo is the Japanese martial art most often compared to Zen. #budo #zen #puremind #posture
Kyudo is the Japanese form of archery, but how is it different from the Western archery you see at the Olympics? The largest difference is the goal. In archery, your goal is to advance your skills in hitting the target at a higher precision, whereas in kyudo, you aim to train and discipline your mind. Because precision is not the primary necessity, the bow used in kyudo has not changed its shape from ancient times. Which means they have not made the bow more convenient or easier to handle on purpose, because the true goal is not to hit the target. This makes it crucial to master the correct posture in order to draw the bow. Within those movements, you are required to obtain the ideal way of breathing and to train your mental condition to always maintain a calm mind. So drawing a Japanese bow is actually quite difficult, and even if you train every single day, it will take you at least 3 months before being able to shoot at a target. Out of many Japanese traditional martial arts, there is something called “kyūdō,” which is one that uses the Japanese bow to train. Oftentimes when kyūdō is introduced to foreign countries, it is explained as “the Japanese archery.” However, technically speaking, kyūdō and archery are very different. The only thing they have in common is that you use a bow and arrow. So today, as a man who has trained in kyūdō for a year in the past, I will first briefly explain the history of kyūdō, and then the 5 differences between kyūdō and archery. However, I don’t have much experience in kyūdō, so I have received advice from my former instructor who has been training for more than 20 years. ●All Nippon Kyudo Federation 🤍 [Time codes] 0:00 Let's START! 1:29 The history of Kyūdō 1:50 1. In Japanese kyudo, archers use traditional asymmetric bows over 2 meters long as they attempt to strike a target from a distance of either 28 or 60 meters. Self-mastery is key in this exacting martial art, where the target is said to reflect the heart, and correct attitude and technique are seen as intertwined. We use a high-speed camera to track the path of a skilled archer's arrows as they fly through the air, shining a light on the depth and subtleties of kyudo's hidden techniques.

Longbows, or Yumi, have been used in Japan for centuries. But today, a handmade bamboo bow can cost over $2,000. At over 2 meters tall, these bows are difficult to handle. And making them is just as challenging. Kanjuro Shibata carves raw bamboo and inserts over 100 wedges to curve the bow. So how are these bows made? And why are they so expensive? The ritual or ceremonial side of Japanese archery or Kyudo. At the Shimogamo Shinto Shrine, the oldest and one of the largest Shinto temples in Kyoto, hundreds of Japanese archers gather in a Shinto ceremony to ward off evil spirits that live outside the temple. The archer shoots a "whistling" arrow called Kabura-ya over the roof of the enormous temple gate. The whistling sound wards off evil spirits that collect outside the gate and in the forest beyond. Shinto religion can be seen in many aspects of martial arts in Japan, and in the making of Samurai swords. Subscribe to this channel for more movies and visit emptymindfilms.com

In Japanese archery or Kyudo, one is naturally preoccupied with hitting the target, yet is this the most important aspect? As a competitive sport it would be. But if you discuss this with a Kyudo master they will tell you this is not the ultimate goal. Only by shooting in “Seishahitchū” - the right way, and with correct technique “Shaho-Hassetsu” can progress be made, but there is no end. Kyudo master Takeuchi sensei says you must “Shoot from the heart.” So should reassess why we practice martial arts? The Budo (Martial Arts) Federation of Japan in their handbook say’s it is to “develop one’s character. “ We think Kyudo can show us the way. Try this exercise to learn the tenouchi (proper gripping of the weapon) principles and experience the feeling of yugaeri (bow turning after the release): 1 - set the left hand's tenmonsen (hearth line) on the left-front corner of the bow. 2 - bring together the small, ring and middle fingers. DON'T SQUEEZE THE NIGIRI. 3 - fold the skin flap between your thumb and index down (that area is called the kokou - tiger's mouth - 虎口). 4 - push the yumi's right rear corner with the base of your thumb, straigth towards front. 5 - pull the string not more than 3-5 cm. Hold it very loosely between the right hand's fingers, so that it releases naturally after this very short pull. The tenmonsen forms a fulcrum and the thumb pushing on the nigiri corner is torquing the yumi. Thus the yumi will rotate about 280 degrees in hand, if not held tightly. This should allow the left hand to learn how to be tight enough for the correct tsunomi (force on the grip) to be applied, while being relaxed enough to allow the yumi not to be choked and to rotate the correct amount after the hanare (release).
